The Project
For the last five years, Optical Media have been at the forefront of streamed Bowls Coverage, providing broadcast services to Bowls England, Bowls Scotland & the prestigious World Bowls Tour.
After being approached in 2018 to enhance coverage of the Worlds Bowls Tour, we have worked in conjunction with the BBC to provide a seamless crossover from stream to broadcast, with earlier matches being streamed live and the latter half of the tournament broadcast on BBC 2.
With up to five matches a day in the initial stages of the tournament - each lasting up to two hours - and an attentive audience peaking at 750,000 per match, the World Bowls Tour team needed a high quality but cost effective product to keep viewers watching throughout the day.
The Solution
By providing an innovative blend of 4K remotely operated cameras and operated cameras, we were able to provide extensive coverage of all the action on the rink at a cost effective price, covering matches with a two-person crew. Optical also created bespoke opening titles & graphics for the matches.
We have since taken this solution to Bowls England’s Aviva National Finals, further improving coverage by including ‘explainer’ graphics showing routes to the finals, and cut interviews with players for later matches, plus edited highlight programmes throughout tournaments to reach a new audience - with a dedicated producer/editor working remotely.
In 2023, OpticalMedia successfully negotiated the broadcast of the Bowls Scotland’s National Championships on BBC iPlayer - allowing the tournament to reach new eyes, with slick branding and graphic design giving the tournament prominent place.
