The annual Great British Pub Awards are the highlight of any publicans calendar, as pubs across the country celebrate heroes of their industry in a high energy, glitzy affair. But after Covid forced the 2021 event to be a hybrid show, OpticalMedia were approached to manage the stream and multiple virtual winners, who joined the ceremony remotely.
With the 2021 awards deemed a success, organisers WilliamReed were keen to keep the hybrid element in future ceremonies. OpticalMedia were again chosen to stream the 2022 & 2023 events for pubs to host their own ‘watch parties’, and cheer on their local. But we wanted to deliver a different experience for online viewers- and proposed a 30 minute ‘pre show’ exclusively on the stream - ensuring they would feel as much a part of the awards as in-person guests.
The Project
Highlights of the 2023 Great British Pub Awards
The build up show consisted of interviews, made-on-the-day videos telling the story of Best Pub Chef (whose finalists had a live cook-off on the day to secure the award), and interactive elements, including a pub quiz, and crossing live to a pub hosting a watch party.
Bespoke graphics were created to match the feel of the awards along with opening titles, social media messages were called out, award sponsors were promoted with two commercial breaks, and a seasoned TV presenter was hired to bring a truly professional feel to the stream, before coverage of the awards took place.
With a strict start time of 20:00 for the awards, Optical’s experience in live television came to the forefront- adjusting timings for the live interviews and segments, to ensure we hit an exact finish and seamless transition to the live awards
The awards themselves were covered by five cameras, including a ‘steadicam’- capturing the emotions and the feelings of the awards throughout.
OpticalMedia also edited and delivered a post-events highlights wrapup film within 24 hours of the event, allowing the awards to be shared across social media.
